Mother’s Day is a holiday celebrating motherhood in all its forms. It has been a national holiday in the USA since 1914. This year, Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 14.

Why Do We Celebrate Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day is celebrated not only in the US but in many other countries in the world. And while some countries may celebrate it on different days, the idea behind this holiday is the same for anyone celebrating it.

We should express love and gratitude for our mothers any day of the year. But it is certainly worth having a special day for these very special people. Mother’s Day is for honoring mothers, maternal bonds, and the vast contribution of all mothers to society.

This day is a special reminder for all of us to never diminish the effort mothers make and another amazing opportunity to express our gratitude.

Expressing Love On Mother’s Day

You may love your mother with unconditional love but you may not always be able to express your feelings. This may have a number of reasons. Perhaps you have never seen your family members showing their feelings. Or, it is simply the way you are. People show their love differently.

But if you want to take Mother’s Day as a chance to express your feelings to your mother or maybe improve your relationship with her, here’s some advice you can take.

Communicate
As with any other relationship, communication is key in your relationship with your mother. Let Mother’s Day be the reason you establish healthy and honest communication with your mother. Know that almost any interpersonal issue is solvable if you communicate. And don’t forget to be a good listener too.

Use her love language
Sometimes our parents believe we don’t love them enough simply because we are not using their love language. You may want to express your love to your mother by giving her gifts. But she may only need an ‘I love you, mom.’ to understand that she means a lot to you. But if you know your mother’s love language, try to get out of your comfort zone to make her feel special on her day.

Let her speak her heart
Mothers are some of the busiest people in the world. Whether they are working moms or stay-at-home moms, they always have so much on their plate. And very often, even under the burden of round-the-clock responsibilities and worries, they never say how they really feel and what they really want.

On Mother’s Day, tell your mom and motherly figures in your life how much you care for them and ask them to speak their heart out. Let them tell you what they want in life. Perhaps your mother wants to have more time for herself but she doesn’t know how to do it because she is overloaded with house chores. Or she may have other worries that she never talks about.

Encourage your mother to speak her heart and try to find a way to make her everyday life better as a sign of your unconditional love.

5 Ways To Show Gratitude For Your Mother On Mother’s Day

So, Mother’s Day is a day to express gratitude for mothers. And there are many ways you can do it. Here are 5 things you can do to appreciate your mother and thank her for everything she has done for you.

  • Give her a meaningful gift. Select a meaningful or personalized gift fr your mother. Let her know that you are always ready to go the extra mile for her. Give her her favorite flowers or chocolate, a gift card for her favorite restaurant, and anything that will make her feel special.

  • Spend the day with her. If you are always busy with work or school and don’t spend enough quality time with your mother, spend Mother’s Day with her. Try an activity together, eat something delicious, walk, talk, and create memories.

  • Streamline her life. Buy things for your mom that would make her life easy and her daily chores more efficient. These may be baskets, electric appliances, shelving, anything.

  • Give her a tight hug and a handwritten note. It is not always about material things. Seeing people on the internet gifting expensive things to their mothers may make you feel like you are not doing enough. But trust us when we tell you that your mother will appreciate a tight heartwarming hug and a handwritten note from the heart. And if you have younger siblings, encourage them to do this too.

  • Take on her daily tasks. Doing this is a great way to show your mother how much you appreciate everything she does for you and the entire family. Help her make dinner, do the laundry or cleaning, go shop instead of her, etc. Mothers don’t really need much to feel appreciated.

Overcoming The Mixed Feeling Of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a beautiful celebration of honoring mothers and everything they do for their children, family, and society.

However, we all understand that this day may evoke negative and sad emotions for some people. People who have lost a child or a mother, those who are not in a good relationship with their child or mother, women that have difficulties conceiving, those who have suffered abuse, and many others are sad and distressed on this day.

On Mother’s Day, the social media feeds are usually full of joyful posts celebrating this holiday. We can have nothing against people celebrating this day. But it is good for everyone to learn to be a little more empathetic and thoughtful. And understand that Mother’s Day emotions are complex.

If you are feeling sad or unhappy on Mother’s Day for whatever reason, know that you are not alone. It is okay that you don’t have your feelings all figured out. We recommend you take this day to do whatever you feel like doing to help ease your mind and feel good.
